I am terrible at pausing from all of my daily tasks and responsibilities to find rest. I am always thinking about what needs to be done now, what I haven’t done that I should have, and what needs to be done next. I am constantly coming up with schedules in my head so that I can make sure everything is done on time, and if it’s not, I will sacrifice sleep. At times, I start feeling down because I can easily go weeks without stopping to take my mind off of my responsibilities. Lately, the Lord has been reminding me that first, I don’t have as much control over all of my daily accomplishments as I think I do, and second, He commanded us to rest.
I recently began trying to do a better job at scheduling time for rest. I decided that from Friday night to the start of Saturday evening, I would try to relax. However, I quickly found that I didn’t know what it truly means to rest. Even though I might not be working on my task list, I would still be thinking about what I had not accomplished during the week and what I needed to do once I was “allowed” to work again. Even though I wasn’t physically cleaning the house or going grocery shopping, my mind was still on my task list.
I’m still trying to learn just what it means to rest in the way that the Lord commands, but I believe it involves resting our minds as well. We need to be distracted from our work by focusing on Him, doing something fun, and truly relaxing. It is possible to lie in bed for hours without truly resting if we are thinking and worrying about work. I know that my mind is prone to drift back to what needs to be accomplished, so in addition to spending time with the Lord, I am trying to schedule more fun into my week. I have found that watching a movie or TV at home will not provide the distraction I need because I can easily look around at what I need to do. In order for me to rest during the day, I need an activity that captures my thoughts so that I can’t talk myself out of relaxing.
It is hard to distract ourselves from all of the list items that constantly pull at us, but we need to make sure we truly find time to let go of our responsibilities. We need to be refreshed so that we can be more effective when we come back to them, not mention that the Lord commanded us to do it.
In what ways do you find rest during your busy week?
