I value truth, so I want to be honest with my blog readers. I go by Courtney Leigh on my blog and social media, but I am using a pseudonym. I chose that particular pseudonym because my parents came close to giving me a similar name, and I thought I would try it out. I know that some friends and family will recognize me, and I’m okay with that. However, there are several reasons I have chosen to use a pseudonym, and I wanted to share them with you here.
First, I work full-time, and I felt it best to keep my blog separate from my professional life. I am in the early stages of my career in higher education; and due to the nature of what I write, I believe it is best not to make my blog easily searchable to future employers before they have gotten to know me. I have read plenty of articles about employees in higher education receiving criticism or being fired for what they have written on the Internet, and I do not want to jeopardize any future career prospects because someone disagrees with me.
I also use a pseudonym to help myself remember that the purpose of my blog is not about gaining followers for my personal gain. While I do see reasons why it is good to use one’s true name, I know that it could be easy to be caught up in gaining blog and social media followers. The purpose of my blog is not to make myself famous. I write because I want to ignite discussion about difficult topics and to share what I believe God is teaching me. It helps me remember my purpose when I am not using my own name.
I can see plenty of arguments for using my real name. I know that it can be good to be vulnerable and to share one’s true identity, and I certainly don’t see anything wrong with other bloggers using their own names. Maybe one day I will start using mine on my blog, but, for now, I’m Courtney Leigh.
