Noah’s wife is not someone I have seen much in studies of Genesis before, but I believe her role was significant because of what her family experienced. We can find a few brief mentions of her in Genesis 7 and 8. While the story primarily mentions Noah, I would like to explore what it would have been like to be married to someone like Noah.
God came to Noah to tell him about a catastrophic flood that would destroy most of life on earth due to the violence and corruption that had become commonplace. Noah was different, so God told Noah to build an ark to save his family and to protect two of each animal.
There is no mention of a visit from God to Noah’s wife or family. Noah likely had to go to his family to explain that God told him to build a massive ark to protect them from a worldwide flood. Oh, and by the way, they were taking two of each animal with them.
Now, I don’t know about you, but if my husband came home one day with that news, it would take me some time to come around. I mean, people say God tells them outlandish stuff all of the time, and it turns out to be false. This scenario could easily sound like another one of those misguided predictions. We are talking about significant time and effort that would be required for this task. We don’t know Noah’s day job, but I imagine building the ark took time away from it, not to mention time away from his family and helping out at home.
The mention of Noah’s wife was so brief that we really don’t know how she reacted. However, there are some traits that she likely would have needed to participate in the family’s calling.
1. She likely trusted her husband and had confidence in his relationship with God. He was asking her to join him in a huge calling, and she would have needed to trust her husband when he said he heard such an out of the ordinary command from God.
2. She was probably familiar with God’s voice herself, and she could tell that what Noah told her came from God. She trusted God, so when Noah delivered the news to her, she could follow what he was was doing because of her own faith in God.
3. Noah undoubtedly needed a lot of support, and his wife likely provided that encouragement for him. He was probably not exactly popular. If anyone saw or heard about the ark and didn’t know why he was building it, Noah probably looked like a strange neighbor who was storing up for the apocalypse. If they did know why, they knew that Noah believed that God was going to kill them in the flood. Either way, it would have been hard for him to have anyone on his side. He would have needed an a outpouring of support from his family, especially his spouse.
From Noah’s wife, we can see the importance of being able to recognize God’s voice when He calls us to something great. Because of her faith, Noah’s wife was able to join her husband in an enormous calling by believing in the plan to build and temporarily live on the ark.
So far in this series, we have looked at Eve and Noah’s wife. We have seen that women were created with a unique purpose. These women were also familiar with God’s voice, and they trusted their husbands.
I would enjoy reading your comments about how hearing God’s voice and/or trusting in your husband’s goals impacted your life.
